Gone with the Limb
Two preprints cast doubt on the reality of the 130-GeV gamma-ray excess found by Fermi. Most likely the signature is connected to Earth limb photons (arXiv:1209.4548) and (arXiv:1209.4562)
Machine Learning from Fermi
We have just posted a recently accepted article discussing the application of machine-learning algorithms to Fermi AGN (arXiv:1209.4359).

Oldest cave art
Uranium-thorium dating shows that the Altamira cave paintings might go back 40,800 years. While the Altamira cave is closed to the public. There are similar caves nearby that are worth a visit. Humbling.

We need to talk about keVins
Recent paper gets the price for best particle name since quarks (arXiv:1205.0551). Remains to be seen if Warm Dark Matter "keVins" can save the day.

Rumors that the faster-than-light measurements by OPERA might have been flawed. There is a lesson here: if you are going to unravel physics be extra careful.

To c or not to c, that is the question
Interesting column about collaboration/competition in Nature this week. Apparently Max Planck once said "A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it"

Galaxy clusters in gamma
2012 opens with a preprint reporting a possible Fermi detection of extended emission from Virgo, Fornax, and Coma. With a dark matter interpretation to boot. We'll have to wait if the Fermi team has a final say on this. You can read the whole thing here.
